SNAPSHOT PC Audit Tool

Why Bother?

Software Piracy has always been a big issue but not well understood. Quite frankly we don’t care how much the software companies are losing due to piracy according to “industry statistics and annual surveys”, BUT we do care how much enterprises are losing due to sloppy work practices, ineffective licensing solutions and incomplete and inaccurate record keeping.

Now that FONTS have also emerged as a big risk area for copyright compliance, then this simple little FREE utility tool will illustrate for you just how much a risk you are facing when you examine the file counts generated by this Snapshot software utility.

The sample audit file generated from Snapshot will bring details to you about the total of the following file types installed on this PC;

¨             Exe files – these are typically all covered by EULAs and copyright and have legal issues if not licensed correctly. The audit file will also contain a sample of 100 files fully named (where possible) for illustration of what needs to be considered for establishing “Proof Of Purchase” details.

¨             Image/Picture files - these are listed to ensure you check on “questionable content” that could place you at risk

¨             Fonts – these are not generally known until now to have EULAs and copyright and have legal issues if not licensed correctly.

¨             DLLs – these are not generally known until now to have EULAs and copyright and have legal issues if not licensed correctly.

¨             Sound & Music files – MP3 files etc, these are covered usually under copyright of the artists through the Recording Industry Association - if ripped from CDs or downloaded from the Internet via file sharing or BitTorrent type sites then you are at risk – your IP address may already be known to anti-piracy authorities!

¨             Movie files – AVI, DVD, MOV files etc, these are covered usually under copyright of the artists through the Motion Picture Industry Association - if ripped from DVDs or downloaded from the Internet via file sharing or BitTorrent type sites then you are at risk – your IP address may already be known to anti-piracy authorities!

¨             Other applications – listed for convenience as these are generally tied into application packs and EULAs

¨             Helpful Hint - Large quantities of music, images and movie files (over and above what came with the installed software) could be placing you at risk if these have been acquired illegally and in any event are wasting valuable hard disk storage and backup space as well as degrading network performance of server based systems.
