In Australia, approximately 1 in 3 copies is illegal and may even be higher than this.
 
This poses a legal risk under the Australian Copyright Act 1968 (fines alone can amount to up to $ 50,000 for an individual or up to $ 250,000 for an organisation plus gaol and legal fees plus replacement software etc)

In certain circumstances illegal software may also comprise a risk where you are electronically exchanging data under EDI/Electronic Trading rules where it is proven that your illegal software caused a data interchange problem .
